The Basics of Carpet Cleaning

The Basics of Carpet Cleaning

Carpet is one of the most common flooring types installed in the home. It is a versatile material that can be used in a variety of spaces and can add warmth and luxury to your space. There is no carpet on the market that doesn’t require a thorough cleaning at some point throughout its life. In fact, most types of carpet should be professionally cleaned annually.

The Benefits of a Clean Carpet

Keeping your carpets clean and tidy may seem like a bit of a hassle at first. But this is a necessary process that will help to keep dust, dirt, and allergens at bay. Vacuuming regularly is the first line of defense. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. If you have pets that shed, vacuuming may need to be done twice a week.

Often overlooked, but majorly important, is your carpets manufacturer’s warranty. Most manufacturer’s warranties will be excluded if your carpet is not professionally cleaned annually. Each manufacturer is different, so refer to your particular warranty for details.

Having Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned

There is a massive difference between cleaning your carpets yourself and having a professional do the job. Professional carpet cleaning equipment is vastly superior to any residential grade equipment. The same is true for the detergents and other cleaning agents they use. Again, most manufacturers will have specific recommendations on when and how often you must have your carpets professionally cleaned.

DIY Carpet Cleaning

Obviously, along with professional cleaning comes significant cost. As we said before, professional equipment and cleaning agents will usually be vastly superior to home cleaning products. However, there are some ways to forgo the professionals entirely and attempt to clean your own carpets.

The first step is to purchase or rent a steam cleaning machine. Most hardware stores will have these for sale and/or for rent. Each machine operates slightly differently, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the specific machine you’re using.

If you have properly cleaned your carpet with a steam cleaner, it will be only slightly damp to the touch. If the carpet is oversaturated with water, then the machine was not powerful enough to effectively deep clean the carpet. Floor fans can be used to help expedite the drying process. With all of the variables between cleaning machines and detergent mixture amounts, there are several speedbumps that can present themselves for the DIYer.
